Our hearts go out to the family and friends of Katlyn Harp during this extraordinarily difficult time.
​
While we understand this tragedy is still under investigation, deaths resulting from domestic violence are not new and are happening right here in our own backyard. The Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence reports that more than 1,500 victims and perpetrators have died from domestic-violence-related incidents over the last 10 years in Pennsylvania. Unfortunately, domestic violence only makes the headlines in the aftermath of a tragedy.

The effects of domestic violence are devastating and extend far beyond the walls of the home. The ripples of violence are felt throughout the community.
​
In the wake of a tragedy, we often ask ourselves what we could have done differently. Unfortunately, we can’t change the past. But, we can work together to make a better, safer future. We can ask ourselves what we, as a community, can do to prevent future tragedies. We can band together and work toward the common goal of increasing awareness about the prevalence and impact of domestic violence. We can demonstrate consistent support for victims and their families. We can ask policy makers to support domestic violence initiatives. We can encourage law enforcement and judges to assess potential lethality of domestic violence incidents and hold perpetrators accountable for their actions. We can spread the word that help is available in the community.

Domestic violence programs are at risk of losing federal funding that ensures survivors can access lifesaving services. It is critical that we, as a community, contact our local representatives to urge them to support, increase, and protect critical funding.
